Am I now liable for the debt my partner accumulated before we met?
My partner has recently moved in with me and my 2 daughters but it is becoming apparant that there are some financial skeletons. When he split with his wife 2 and a half years ago she ran up loads of debt in his name some of which were never paid. His ex girlfriend did the same, and the letters and attachment of earnings are now starting to appear.
My first question is can any of the creditors he owes money to lay claim to anything of mine and if they can how can I stop this happening as these debts have all been run up when he has left the property but not removed himself from the bills etc. And where do we start to sort out this mess? Am I best avoiding marrying him until all this is sorted?

The debts are definitely not your liability and no-one can claim them from you.
He needs appropriate professional advice and needs to speak to ClearDebt or any other reputable companies – get him to visit www.iva.com where a list of recommended firms are published.
Whether you marry him or not, has no reflection on his debt or how it reflects on you.

thank you for answering this. My fiane wants to get married however when i lost my job and things i couldnt pay my way amounting 15k in debt, although im paying small amounts back which is all i can afford i am considering throwing the towel in and going bankrupt, as she has never had any debt i am so worried about bringing these problems to her door and so have been holding off getting married.
I was told that my debts would become hers?
Please advise.
